The Walt Disney Company has a long history when it comes to the Academy Awards. Last night the 89th Academy Awards took place in Hollywood, California and the Walt Disney Company took home four Oscars.
In the Animated Feature category the Walt Disney Animation Studios had two movies competing against each other, Zootopia and Moana. Zootopia was chosen as the best and awarded the Oscar. “Five years ago, we got this crazy idea of talking about humanity with talking animals in the hopes that when the film came out, it would make the world just a slightly better place,” Zootopia co-director Byron Howard said in accepting the film’s Oscar. Also on stage to accept the award was co-director Rich Moore and Clark Spencer.
I came across a post from the Disney Parks Blog tonight announcing the results of their Disneyland Resort Cast Choice Awards. Almost 1,400 cast members voted for their favorite experiences at the Disneyland Resort, from favorite ride to favorite restaurant.
I thought it would be fun to show their results along with my choice for each of the categories. So let’s begin:
Cast Members: Haunted Mansion – “Whether it’s when grim, grinning ghosts are out to socialize, or when Jack Skellington adds his own style of holiday cheer, this New Orleans Square classic is cast members’ spirited year-round favorite.” (Disney Parks Blog)
Main Street e-Zine: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – “The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness!” (Disneyland Resort website)

By today’s standards, Space Station X-1 would seem kind of boring or lame but in 1955 you may have heard it described as amazing. When the gates opened on July 17, 1955 it was only one of three attractions/exhibits in an unfinished Tomorrowland. The concept of the exhibit was to view the Earth from a Space Station that was orbiting miles above the planet. After entering through a ticket booth where Spaceman K-7 was selling tickets for ten cents or accepting an “A” ticket to ride, visitors walked through a tunnel into the exhibit.
